What Benefits Does This Flooring Have?

Why Choose Luxury Vinyl Tiles??

Luxury vinyl tiles have emerged in recent years as the leading hard flooring. With the emergence of companies such as Amtico and Karndean and their aggressive marketing strategies, Luxury vinyl tiles have now become a well known alternative to natural flooring products.

But what makes Luxury Vinyl Tiles better than natural flooring products???

There are many more benefits to using luxury vinyl floor tiles than going for the natural equivalent, the main reasons are:

Durable

Unlike ceramic, slate, granite, porcelain, stone and solid wooden floors, luxury vinyl tiles will not crack, chip or splinter, they are made from a customised form of vinyl, which come with between 12 and 20 year guarantees based on the wear layer, not to be compared to the traditional lino, vinyl on rolls, luxury vinyl tiles are a lot more complex and durable.

Waterproof

This flooring is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens as it is waterproof, the way it is made enables you to mop the floor clean, so used as a bathroom tile or kitchen tile is a perfect flooring solution. Luxury vinyl tiles should always be considered as a flooring option.

Warm and Quiet Underfoot

Luxury vinyl tiles are quiet and warm underfoot, unlike ceramic tiles or natural stone floors, which can become really cold in winter, luxury vinyl tiles actually help insulate your home and keep heating costs down. Once stuck down they are extremely quiet underfoot, ideal in flats, bedrooms or hallways, which can become noisey areas, something which is often common with a floating floor such as laminate flooring or solid/engineered wood flooring.

Easy to Clean and Hygienic

The maintenance benefits for luxury vinyl tiles are very straightforward, you can brush, vacuum and mop them to keep them clean. Unlike a solid wooden floor, which would need sanding and sealing every so often, all you would need to do with a vinyl tile floor is clean with a polish every 6-8 months, which is easily applied. Also luxury vinyl tiles do not harbour dirt or bacteria so are a great option for kitchens and bathrooms

Realistic

Luxury Vinyl Tiles can be installed in any room in the home, they are intended to look just like their natural counterpart but without the practical drawbacks natural flooring products come with. With modern technology creating extremely realistic designs, you would be surprised how many people mistake luxury vinyl tiles to the real thing, whether it be natural wood or natural stone floors.

Design Orientated

Being able to use design strips and borders with luxury vinyl tiles, is one of the main reasons why people choose them. This is because unlike any other flooring alternative, you can create borders to suit your oom, if you have a bull nose stair in your hallway, you can create a curved border, if you have an island in the middle of your kitchen floor, you can create a feature from it using design strips.

The possibilities are endless so what are you waiting for? explore the fantastic choices luxury vinyl tiles can offer

How is This Flooring Installed?

Luxury vinyl tiles, whether it be Karndean, Amtico, Polyflor or any other brands require the same method in insulation.

There are usually 2 types of subfloor - Solid (Concrete) or Wood

For wooden subfloors the following installation method is usually the norm:

1. if it is floorboards you wish to lay on, first you will require at least 6mm ply board, stapled or screwed down depending on the preferred method. The staples or screws will need to be countersunk to ensure they are not sitting proud of the ply board.

2. The second stage is to apply a skim coat or feather finish as it is also known as, we provide this product it is a thin water based primer, it is used on the ply board to create a totally flat and smooth finish, if this layer is not applied, you can usually see the joints in the plyboard once the luxury vinyl tiles have been fitted. So to achieve the best finish this thin skim coat is necessary, we recommend using F Ball Stop Gap 500, which we sell in the adhesives and maintenance section above.

3. Once the skim coat has dried (a couple of hours usually dependant on room conditions) then the adhesive can be applied, using an A1 or A2 trowel, the adhesive to be applied evenly to the surface of the feather finish on top of the plyboard. We recommend using either F Ball's, F44 Acrylic adhesive, F46 Pressure sensitive adhesive or F48 High Temperature adhesive, which is used in areas subject to excessive heat or direct sunlight.

4. Once the adhesive is tacky to the touch, the vinyl tiles can be placed into the tacky adhesive and pressure applied to ensure full adhesion.

For Solid Concrete Floors then the usual method is used:

1. Check first that there is no damp reading in the floor, if there is you will need to apply a liquid DPM (damp proof membrane)

2. Providing there is little or no damp reading in the floor then the floor will need to be primed. We recommend using F Ball P131 General Neoprene Primer availble in our store.

3. Usually using either a water based screed or latex self levelling compound, to even out the floor and create a nice smooth flat subfloor, ready for the luxury vinyl tiles.

4. The same method with the adhesive applies the same as with a wooden subfloor.
